AMDeC's New York Cancer Project (NYCP) has produced an enormous database of health information with companion genetic material on 20,000 individuals of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Initially, we are offering this resource to researchers at AMDeC-affiliated institutions who are interested in using it for research on cancer, diabetes, and/or heart disease. Once the final processes and procedures are completed, we will offer the resource for national use.

The NYCP recently reached the successful conclusion of its large-scale recruitment and data collection pilot phase. Currently, the NYCP database contains information on approximately 20,000 subjects based on an hour-long interview. These subjects were voluntarily consented for broad use of medical research with de-identified data and samples. The self-reported data include demographics, personal and family medical history, lifestyle, etc. NYCP participants also donated approximately 50 milliliters of blood, which is stored in the NYCP Biorepository at the North Shore Long Island Jewish Research Institute, and is linked via barcode to the information in the NYCP database. Given the success of recruitment during the pilot phase, we are pleased to offer researchers from AMDeC-affiliated institutions the opportunity to benefit from this resource before we make it available to the scientific community at large. During the data access pilot phase, scientists will be able to obtain the following data:

Available from NYCP Informatics:

Select subjects by age, sex, race, religion, and medical conditions:
  • Cancers (represented using about 110 distinct codes)
  • Other diseases (approximately 30 codes)
  • Multiple races (16 distinct codes)
  • Multiple religions (20 codes)
  • Ethnicity (6 codes), for subjects identified as Hispanic
  • Available from NYCP Biorepository:
*For some of our participant demographics: NYC Report

DNA samples in amounts which are appropriate for PCR-based genotyping assays. DNA will be provided on up to 500 subjects according to specified criteria (age, sex, ethnic background, etc.). 0.5-1.0 micrograms will be provided on each subject in a 96 well plate format at concentrations of approximately 20-50 ng per microliter.

The information listed above will initially be available on a limited basis. The NYCP Informatics and Biorepository will be able to provide more complex datasets to researchers, including information on family members as well as custom programming, in the future.

To apply for use of this data, please follow the link NYCP application. The application form is downloadable (a word document). Please download and submit a completed proposal via e-mail to NYCP@amdec.org. A review committee for the pilot phase will vet each application. Once approved, charges for use of the NYCP resource will be based on the amount of effort required to extract data sets and biological samples. All communication pertaining to the NYCP data should be e-mailed to: NYCP@amdec.org, ATTN: Data Access.
