AMDeC in Action

AMDeC Facilitates Agreement with RainDance Technologies to provide RDT 1000 Access to the Tri-Institutional Research Program of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, The Rockefeller University, and Weill Cornell Medical College

February 22, 2010
Technology will be available to all of AMDeC’s 26 member institutions as part of its technology access program

NEW YORK, Feb. 22, 2010 -- AMDeC, the Academy for Medical Development and Collaboration, announced today that RainDance Technologies will provide access to the RDT 1000 sequence enrichment platform with the Tri-Institutional Research Program.  The acquisition resulted from a jointly submitted proposal from MSKCC’s Genomics Core Laboratory, The Rockefeller University’s Genome Resource Center, and Weill Cornell Medical College’s Genomics Core.  When operational, the instrument will be available for use by AMDeC’s membership of 26 biomedical research institutes in New York. AMDeC spearheaded the technology acquisition through the organization’s vendor partnership agreement with RainDance Technologies

Beginning March 2010, researchers statewide will have access to the cutting-edge technology, which greatly accelerates enrichment of targeted portions of the human genome before processing on next generation sequencing platforms. The instrument was placed via AMDeC’s technology access program, which provides consortium-wide access to emerging technologies after an AMDeC facilitated Request for Proposal (RFP).

“AMDeC continues at the forefront of leading scientific collaboration across New York’s great academic institutions by providing access to technology that many researchers may not be able to afford on their own, ” said Maria Mitchell, Ph.D., President and CEO of AMDeC. “Like the innovative nature of RainDance’s signature RainStorm™ technology, AMDeC’s pioneering approach to team science and groundbreaking efforts for academic access are exemplified through this agreement.”

The proposal submitted by the Tri-Institutional Research Program was among many others submitted by AMDeC member institutions to the RFP. The proposals were evaluated by RainDance and peer-reviewed by researchers outside of the AMDeC membership. The application reflected the best scientific applications and a solid plan for making the technology broadly available to AMDeC’s members.

“We are very excited for the opportunity to partner with AMDeC and its member institutions.” said Roopom Banerjee, President and Chief Executive Officer of RainDance Technologies.  “The RainStorm™ technology, when combined with the current Next Generation Sequencing Technologies, offers Industry leading performance for targeted DNA re-sequencing.  This partnership with the exceptional scientific minds at the AMDeC member institutions, along with the proven enrichment quality of our flagship RDT 1000 product, will certainly accelerate breakthrough discoveries in genomic research.”   “The AMDeC announcement follows closely on co-marketing partnerships that RainDance announced last week with Life Technologies and Pacific Biosciences,” Banerjee said.  “We continue to be very active in partnering with leading customers and next-generation sequencing companies to advance the science of human healthcare.”
